Psalm 103:17-18
The steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children's children,
to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
This Psalm beautifully captures the idea of generational continuity in God’s covenant promises. While the Abrahamic covenant (e.g., Genesis 17:7) establishes God’s commitment to be God to believers and their offspring throughout their generations, Psalm 103 personalizes it in praise: God’s hesed (steadfast, covenantal love) endures eternally for those in covenant relationship with Him, and His righteousness (right-standing, blessings, and vindication) flows to the “children’s children”—a phrase emphasizing multi-generational succession.
Psalm 103 is a hymn of thanksgiving that lists God’s mercies—forgiveness, healing, redemption, and crowning with love and mercy—before turning to the enduring nature of His character. Verses 17-18 form a pivotal contrast to the fleeting life of man (vv. 15-16, like grass that withers). Human life is temporary, but God’s steadfast love is “from everlasting to everlasting.” This isn’t abstract; it’s covenantally anchored.
The promise is conditional yet gracious: it rests on those who fear Him (reverence and trust) and extends to those who keep His covenant and remember to do His commandments. In covenant theology, this echoes the biblical pattern where God’s grace operates in family lines—parents faithfully teaching and modeling obedience, leading to blessing for descendants (cf. Deuteronomy 7:9; Exodus 20:6). The “children’s children” language underscores succession: not just immediate offspring, but grandchildren and beyond, aligning with postmillennial hopes of Christ’s kingdom advancing through faithful generations building Christendom.
This isn’t automatic or magical—covenant succession requires active remembrance and obedience—but God’s faithfulness provides the foundation. He delights to extend His righteousness (including salvation, provision, and influence) down family lines when covenant loyalty is maintained.
In the context of building up Christendom for generations (as in covenantal Christian vision), Psalm 103:17-18 fuels confidence: God’s love doesn’t stop at one generation. Faithful believers today can trust that their covenant-keeping will bear fruit in their children’s children, as the kingdom advances and the earth fills with those who fear the Lord.
Let this Psalm stir us to fear God, keep His covenant, and disciple the next generation—knowing His steadfast love endures forever.
